On Tuesday of Week 2, the Edinburgh College Preps visited the Shrine of Remembrance in the city. Whilst there, they took a visit to the Education Centre and explored the new section underneath, hearing stories and seeing uniforms of servicemen and women.
Whilst on tour, a friendly guide from the Shrine helped students to understand what service to others means with a visit to the monument of Simpson and his Donkey outside. After a rooftop visit overlooking the city, students and teaching staff visited the Eternal Flame which is continually lit 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to remember the fallen. They explored the Inner Sanctum of the Shrine itself, and the Marble Centrepiece engraved with the words, ‘Greater Love Hath No Man’. These words are from the 15th chapter of John, verse 13, where Jesus speaks about laying down His life for others:
“Greater love hath no man than this, than to lay down his life for his friends”
A handmade wreath was presented and laid at the centrepiece by the students. A picnic lunch on the lawns finished an adventurous and wonder-filled day.
Lest we forget.
